May 16, 2024: Birth Advocacy Day

WHEREAS, the State of Michigan recognizes the fundamental right of all individuals to access respectful, safe, and empowering maternity care throughout the childbirth journey; and,

WHEREAS, birth advocacy seeks to ensure that every person has the autonomy to make informed choices regarding their reproductive health, pregnancy, and childbirth experiences, free from coercion, discrimination, or unnecessary medical interventions; and,

WHEREAS, evidence-based maternity care practices, including midwifery care, doula support, and childbirth education, are essential components of holistic and person-centered maternity care, advancing health outcomes for birthing individuals and their families; and,

WHEREAS, disparities in maternal health outcomes persist, disproportionately affecting historically marginalized communities, including communities of color and individuals with low socioeconomic status, highlighting the urgent need for equity-focused approaches to maternity care; and,

WHEREAS, birth advocates, including midwives, doulas, childbirth educators, healthcare professionals, community organizations, and policymakers, play a crucial role in raising awareness, promoting access to comprehensive maternity care services, and advocating for policy reforms that prioritize maternal and infant health equity;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 16, 2024, as Birth Advocacy Day in the State of Michigan.
