September 2024: General Aviation Appreciation Month

WHEREAS, general aviation and community airports play a critical role in the lives of Michigan’s citizens, as well as in the operation of our businesses and farms; and,

WHEREAS, aviation-related activities annually contribute nearly $22 billion to Michigan’s economy, support over 33,000 jobs, and provide a total payroll of over $1.4 billion; and,

WHEREAS, the state of Michigan has 210 publicly owned airports serving more than 16,000 pilots and nearly 7,000 registered aircraft; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan is home to 111 repair stations, 10 Federal Aviation Administration-approved pilot schools educating almost 5,500 student pilots, and employing nearly 2,900 flight instructors; and,

WHEREAS, general aviation improves the overall quality of life by supporting emergency medical and healthcare services, law enforcement, firefighting, disaster relief, and investments in sustainable fuels and emerging technologies; and,

WHEREAS, general aviation airports are critical infrastructure that ensure future economic growth and support the next generation of aviation professionals and pilots;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 2024 as General Aviation Appreciation Month in Michigan.
