September 30, 2024: Megatron Day

WHEREAS, Calvin Johnson, also known as “Megatron,” has earned his place as one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history, captivating fans with his remarkable talent, dedication, and sportsmanship during his career with the Detroit Lions; and,

WHEREAS, drafted second overall in 2007 from Georgia Tech, Calvin Johnson spent his entire nine-year career with the Lions, amassing an impressive 731 receptions for 11,619 yards and 83 touchdowns, solidifying himself as the franchise leader in all three categories; and,

WHEREAS, Calvin Johnson’s historic achievements include setting the NFL single-season receiving yardage record with an incredible 1,964 yards in 2012, and being selected to six Pro Bowls and three first-team All-Pro teams between 2010 and 2015, affirming his status as a dominant force on the field; and,

WHEREAS, nicknamed “Megatron” for his larger-than-life presence, agility, and speed on the gridiron, Calvin Johnson was unstoppable, helping transform two Lions teams into the playoffs (2011, 2014). His legendary career culminated in his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021, making him only the seventh wide receiver and the second Detroit Lion to be enshrined as a first-ballot inductee; and,

WHEREAS, Calvin Johnson’s commitment to the city of Detroit and its people has extended beyond the football field, as he remains an active figure in the community through charity work and his annual youth football camp; and,

WHEREAS, it is fitting to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary accomplishments and contributions of Calvin Johnson, as he is inducted into the Pride of the Lions during halftime of the Detroit Lions Monday Night Football game against the Seattle Seahawks on September 30, 2024, becoming the 21st member to receive this honor; and,

WHEREAS, Calvin Johnson’s extraordinary talents and contributions to the sport of football have earned him a special place in the hearts of Michiganders and football fans across the nation, and we are proud to honor his legacy and impact as one of the greatest to ever wear the Honolulu blue and silver; 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, and Garlin Gilchrist II, lieutenant governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 30, 2024, as Megatron Day in Michigan.
