January 15, 2025: Foster Grandparent Volunteer Day

WHEREAS, Many older adults in retirement give back to their community by engaging in volunteer work, and,

WHEREAS, nearly 23 percent of older adults volunteered last year, more than any other group; and,

WHEREAS,we must retain the talents and skills of the older adults who help communities in a variety of ways; and,

WHEREAS,Michigan’s 15 Foster Grandparent programs provide low-income adults, ages 55 and older, challenging and meaningful volunteer opportunities in 60 counties throughout the state; and,

WHEREAS,partnering with 253 schools, the Foster Grandparent program meets a variety of personal and community needs that make a positive difference; and

WHEREAS, in Michigan, over 600 Foster Grandparent volunteers contribute over 500,000 hours of service to approximately 5,000 children with special or unique needs, helping them overcome various educational and life skill challenges; and,

WHEREAS,on this day, we join with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Adult Services Agency and the Michigan Community Service Commission within LEO to raise awareness of Michigan’s Foster Grandparent program and to recognize the outstanding service of foster grandparent volunteers currently serving throughout the state providing a positive impact. Their nurturing, mentoring, and overall efforts have contributed greatly to the lives of many children and have helped strengthen our communities.

THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim January 15, 2025, as Foster Grandparent Volunteer Day in Michigan.
