WHEREAS, school districts around the nation will celebrate National School Breakfast Week from March 3 - 7, 2025; and,

WHEREAS, the National School Breakfast Program was permanently established in 1975 to provide low-income children in public and non-profit private schools and residential childcare institutions with a nutritious morning meal each school day, and in 1989 the National School Breakfast Week was launched to raise awareness of the availability of school breakfast meals; and,

WHEREAS,  the 2025 theme for National School Breakfast Week, “Clue In to School Breakfast,” presents an opportunity to remind parents and the entire community that school breakfast is not a mystery, supports building healthy lifelong eating habits, provides a nutritious and energizing start to the day for students, and, in so doing, helps to ensure academic success so students can meet their goals; and,

WHEREAS, during the 2024-2025 school year, the Michigan School Meals program will provide all of Michigan’s 1.4 million public school students with free breakfast and lunch at school to give them the opportunity to focus on learning and a healthier future; and,

WHEREAS, research shows that children who eat breakfast are more likely to reach higher levels of achievement in reading and mathematics, perform better on assessments, have increased memory and concentration, and maintain a healthy weight; and,

WHEREAS, promoting the School Breakfast Program supports Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan Goal 3: Improve the health, safety, and wellness of all learners; and,

WHEREAS, given the advent of the Michigan School Meals Program last year, over 80,000,000 school breakfasts were served to students—an increase of 26 percent over the preceding school year--by school nutrition professionals who worked relentlessly to improve the health and wellness of learners and to help to ensure food security for all students at the same time; and,

WHEREAS, the Michigan Department of Education, Office of Health and Nutrition Services, supports all school food service programs, including the School Breakfast Program, ensuring the health and well-being of the future leaders of our state;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim March 3 – 7, 2025, as School Breakfast Week in Michigan. Let us recognize the dedicated school nutrition professionals who make School Breakfast Week a reality in their schools.
