June 2025: Vitiligo Awareness Month

WHEREAS, Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease that breaks down melanin (skin pigment) cells, resulting in white patches of skin. With this condition, skin starts losing pigment from various parts of the body, at variable speeds and extents depending on the individual. While there are treatment options to help manage the condition, there is no cure for Vitiligo; and,

WHEREAS, an estimated 1% of Americans are affected by Vitiligo and the condition affects males and females equally and can appear at any age. Vitiligo sufferers are observed all over the world, in every community, and impacting every nationality; Dedicated physicians and Vitiligo support groups provide resources, professional workshops, and emotional support to patients living with Vitiligo; and,

WHEREAS, June 25th is officially celebrated as World Vitiligo Day in memoriam of the death of Michael Jackson, who lived with Vitiligo for more than 20 years; and,

WHEREAS, June is recognized as Vitiligo Awareness Month. During this month, celebrations are held globally and here in the United States, the Global Vitiligo Foundation brings together the world’s leading experts and Vitiligo patients to discuss medical research, treatments, and patient perspectives, and educate the public and general medical community to recognize the characteristics of vitiligo and correct misconceptions; and,

WHEREAS, V-Strong Vitiligo Support Community is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded by Lee Thomas, FOX2 TV Entertainment Journalist, and Dr. Henry Lim, MD, Dermatologist at Henry Ford Health Systems in 2007. V-Strong is dedicated to providing education, awareness, and mental support for those living with Vitiligo and their families; and,

WHEREAS, the Global Vitiligo Foundation will host their annual World Vitiligo Day Conference on June 27-29 in Tampa, Florida, hosted by the Beautifully Unblemished Vitiligo Support Group;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 2025 as Vitiligo Awareness Month in Michigan.
