June 2, 2025: Italian National Day

WHEREAS, on this day 79 years ago – June 2, 1946 – the people of Italy voted in a national referendum to form a republic, marking a historic moment in the nation’s history and affirming the values of democracy, self-determination, and civic engagement—principles that deeply resonate with the people of Michigan and reflect our own commitment to freedom, equality, and representative government; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan and Italy share a strong and dynamic connection through industries such as our world-class automotive sectors, with collaboration in advanced manufacturing, innovation, and design helping to drive economic growth, technological advancement, and shared leadership in the global mobility industry; and,

WHEREAS, over the past decade, Michigan has proudly welcomed 18 Italian business investment projects, resulting in the creation of more than 2,140 high-quality jobs and generating a total capital investment of $577.5 million—demonstrating the strength of our economic partnership and the mutual commitment to innovation, skilled workforce development, and long-term prosperity; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan has a rich heritage of Italian culture and Italian Americans have played a vital role in the economic development of Michigan, enriching our communities with traditions of family, culture, hard work, and civic contribution; and,

WHEREAS, Italian National Day, also known as Festa della Repubblica, offers an opportunity to recognize the enduring friendship between Italy and Michigan—including Detroit’s sister city relationship with the automotive powerhouse of Turin—and to honor the shared values and partnerships that continue to strengthen our international bonds;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 2, 2025, as Italian National Day in Michigan and encourage all residents to celebrate the rich heritage, culture, and contributions of Italy and Italian Americans to our society.
