June 30, 2025: Arthrogryposis Awareness Day
June 30, 2025
WHEREAS, arthrogryposis, also known as Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC), refers to a group of non-progressive conditions characterized by multiple joint contractures (stiffness) and muscle weakness present at birth. The most common type of arthrogryposis is Amyoplasia, which typically affects the hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips, feet, and knees. In more severe cases, every joint, including the jaw and spine, can be affected; and,
WHEREAS, AMC is a rare disorder occurring in 1 out of every 3,000 live births, with Amyoplasia accounting for about 43% of these cases and occurring in approximately 1 in every 10,000 live births; and,
WHEREAS, there is no absolute cure for AMC; however, quality of life can be significantly improved through individualized, multidisciplinary care. Physical and occupational therapy, which may include stretching, casting, strengthening, mobility training, and fine motor skill development, are important for enhancing range of motion and fostering independence; and,
WHEREAS, in approximately 30% of cases, a genetic cause can be identified, however, most cases of Amyoplasia are sporadic without an associated genetic link; and;
WHEREAS, there is no prenatal diagnostic tool to test for this condition. During a routine ultrasound, abnormal limbs may be noted, but no definitive cause can be ascertained until further postnatal assessments. Blood work is typical, especially genetic testing. Muscle biopsies are frequently done to determine the cause or rule out other conditions; and,
WHEREAS, National Arthrogryposis Awareness Day is on June 30th with the purpose of raising awareness for AMC and advocating for those who are dealing with the condition;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 30, 2025, as Arthrogryposis Awareness Day in Michigan.
