July 2025: Culinary Careers Month

WHEREAS, the culinary industry is a vital component of Michigan’s economy, culture, and community identity, contributing significantly to tourism, small business development, and workforce innovation; and,

WHEREAS, hospitality creates tens of billions of dollars in annual sales in Michigan and employs 10% of Michigan’s workforce, or more than half a million residents; and,

WHEREAS, culinary professionals, including chefs, cooks, bakers, food scientists, hospitality managers, and restaurant staff, exemplify dedication, skill, creativity, and resilience, enriching our dining experiences and nourishing our communities; and,

WHEREAS, Culinary Careers Month seeks to inspire students and job seekers to explore the many rewarding opportunities available in Michigan’s thriving hospitality industry; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan is home to leading culinary programs, diverse food traditions, award-winning restaurants, and talented individuals who have made substantial contributions to the culinary field both statewide and nationally; and,

WHEREAS, fostering awareness and support for culinary education and career pathways strengthens local economies, promotes food sustainability, and ensures the continued success of Michigan’s hospitality sector; and,

WHEREAS, students exploring a future in hospitality are developing the well-rounded skills that translate to the workplace, developing today’s talent into tomorrow’s restaurant and food service industry leaders; and,

WHEREAS, the month of July provides an ideal opportunity to recognize the passion, skill, and service of culinary professionals across Michigan and to celebrate the vibrant food culture that unites us;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim July 2025 as Culinary Careers Month in Michigan and encourage schools, businesses, community organizations, and citizens to recognize and support the valuable contributions of culinary professionals across the state.
