November 2025: Adoption Month

WHEREAS, nearly 10,000 children in Michigan live apart from their biological parents in foster care and approximately 1,800 are legally ready for adoption, many of whom have already been matched with loving adoptive families, including relatives and foster parents; and,

WHEREAS, we remain steadfast in our commitment to finding each child a safe, nurturing, and loving family for those who continue to wait for permanent homes; and,

WHEREAS, during fiscal year 2025, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), in partnership with contracted private adoption agency partners, provided permanency for approximately 1,400 children through adoption; and,

WHEREAS, we extend our deepest gratitude to adoptive families who open their hearts and homes, creating lasting change in the lives of children, and we affirm the commitment of (MDHHS) to support those who have adopted and those who aspire to adopt in the future; and,

WHEREAS, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to the judges, attorneys, adoption professionals, and others whose dedication, expertise, and compassion make these lifelong family connections possible; and,

WHEREAS, this month, MDHHS, Michigan courts, and private adoption agency partners statewide join together to raise awareness of adoption and its life-changing impact on children, families, and communities; and,

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 2025 as Adoption Month in Michigan, and encourage all Michigan residents to recognize the importance of permanency, to honor adoptive families, and to support efforts ensuring every child has the opportunity for a safe, stable, and loving family.
