April 12-18, 2026: Nontraditional College Student Week

WHEREAS, the State of Michigan has established the Sixty by 30 goal to ensure that at least 60% of working-age adults possess a college degree or skill certification by the year 2030; and,

WHEREAS, nontraditional college students, including those age 25 and older, veterans, returning students, first-generation students, parents, and individuals impacted by life interruptions, are essential to reaching the State’s Sixty by 30 goal; and,

WHEREAS, these students often balance academic pursuits with employment, family responsibilities, and financial challenges while demonstrating resilience, determination, and perseverance in pursuit of educational opportunity; and,

WHEREAS, increasing access to education for nontraditional students strengthens Michigan’s workforce, supports economic prosperity, and contributes to stronger families and communities across the state; and,

WHEREAS, In 2021, the State of Michigan launched Michigan Reconnect, a bipartisan program offering anyone 25 and older a tuition-free associate’s degree or skills certificate at their local community college. Today, more than 200,000 people have taken that first step; and,

WHEREAS, organizations across Michigan, including Second Chance Scholars, a Michigan-based nonprofit organization, work to increase access to higher education and resources that support nontraditional college students as they pursue postsecondary education and career advancement; and,

WHEREAS, recognizing nontraditional college students highlights the importance of inclusive educational pathways and affirms Michigan’s commitment to lifelong learning and second chances; and,

WHEREAS, the State of Michigan recognizes the achievements and contributions of nontraditional college students and the role educational institutions and community organizations play in supporting their success;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, and Garlin Gilchrist II, lieutenant governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim, do hereby proclaim April 12–18, 2026 as Nontraditional College Student Week in Michigan.
