June 2026: Youth Conservation Stewardship Month

WHEREAS, instilling a connection and appreciation for our environment is important to foster from a young age;

WHEREAS, children spend less than an hour per day outside and it has proven to be detrimental to social development, a key factor in childhood obesity, reduced creativity, and poor mental health;

WHEREAS, the advancement of technology and increase in access to it has resulted in a sharp decline in outdoor activity;

WHEREAS, hands-on activities and stewardship are essential for understanding the world around us and inspiring a deep respect for our environment;

WHEREAS, the organization, Bloom Where You Are Planted and founder Iyla O’Connor have taken up the mission of inspiring outdoor play and nature education among youth;

WHEREAS, June is nationally recognized as “Great Outdoors Month” and is the perfect time to introduce statewide youth conservation stewardship;

WHEREAS, during this month, we should focus on encouraging Michigan’s youth to get outside and safely explore in order to develop a love for our environment;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 2026 as Youth Conservation Stewardship Month in Michigan.
