WHEREAS, on Wednesday, June 17th, Detroit will proudly host the Professional Women’s Hockey League Draft, in the historic Fox Theatre, providing a space where teams and fans will convene to select the next generation of talent; and,
WHEREAS, this event stands as a testament to Michigan’s status as a powerhouse for sports and economic development, and to Detroit’s iconic identity as Hockeytown. Detroit is a city shaped by generations of passionate fans and a vibrant hockey culture that continues to define its spirit, hospitality; and,
WHEREAS, the 2026 PWHL Draft brings pride to Michiganders across our state, as we come together to celebrate our shared love for the game of hockey and our collective support for the new PWHL Detroit team; and,
WHEREAS, we are confident the PWHL teams, fueled by the passion of their fans, will make impactful selections during the Draft that inspire hope and excitement for the upcoming hockey season; and,
WHEREAS, we extend our sincere appreciation to the PWHL, the City of Detroit, and all those involved in the planning and execution of the PWHL Draft, including organizers, volunteers, and support personnel, whose tireless efforts ensure the success of this world-class event in Michigan; and,
WHEREAS, we look forward to welcoming Women's hockey fans from near and far to the official Hockeytown, as we join together in embracing excitement, anticipation, and camaraderie that define the sport; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Women’s Hockey Draft Day and encourage everyone to enjoy the festivities and excitement the draft brings to our great state.
