WHEREAS, appendix cancer, also known as appendiceal cancer, is a rare but serious disease, affecting approximately one to two people per million each year in the United States; and,
WHEREAS, although appendix cancer is genetically distinct from colorectal cancer, its incidence has been rising significantly in recent years, particularly among individuals under the age of 50; and,
WHEREAS, due in part to its rarity, appendix cancer is often misunderstood and can be difficult to diagnose, resulting in frequent delays or misdiagnoses that may negatively impact patient outcomes and quality of life; and,
WHEREAS, symptoms of appendix cancer may be vague or absent in early stages, and many individuals are not diagnosed until the disease has advanced, making treatment more complex and challenging; and,
WHEREAS, treatment for appendix cancer varies based on type and stage, and may include surgery, chemotherapy, and other therapies, underscoring the importance of early detection and increased awareness; and,
WHEREAS, the Appendix Cancer PMP Research Foundation, founded in 2008, works to fund research and education to improve the diagnosis and treatment of appendix cancer and pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP); and,
WHEREAS, patients, survivors, caregivers, healthcare professionals, advocates, and organizations across the country are working together to raise awareness, support research, and improve outcomes for those affected by appendix cancer;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim August 2026 as Appendix Cancer Awareness Month in Michigan.
