WHEREAS, Michigan is committed to building a juvenile justice system that reduces recidivism, improves outcomes, and strengthens communities; and,
WHEREAS, youth of color, youth with disabilities, and youth with behavioral health needs are disproportionately represented across the juvenile justice continuum; and,
WHEREAS, elected leaders in Michigan remain committed to transparency, good government, and alignment with research-based approaches to juvenile justice; and,
WHEREAS, the voices and experiences of youth and families most impacted by the system are essential to lasting change; and,
WHEREAS, in July 2026, Michigan took a significant step forward in strengthening the rights and protections of young people by enacting juvenile defense legislation, reaffirming the state's commitment to ensuring effective and developmentally appropriate legal representation for youth involved in the justice system; and,
WHEREAS, the 2026 Youth Justice Action Month theme, “Building a Future Where Youth Thrive,” challenges all Michiganders to raise awareness, amplify youth voices, and push for a more just and unified system;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, and Garlin Gilchrist II, lieutenant governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 2026 as Youth Justice Action Month in Michigan.
