October 9, 2026: Ageism Awareness Day

WHEREAS, everyone is aging; and,
WHEREAS, ageism refers to stereotypes (how we think), prejudices (how we feel) and discrimination (how we act) toward others based on age; and,
WHEREAS, there are more than 2 million Michigan residents ages 60 and older, representing approximately 25% of the state’s population who may be impacted by ageism; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan’s older adults are one of the fastest-growing populations and are valuable members of the state, contributing experiences, skills, caregiving, volunteerism and economic power to its communities; and,
WHEREAS, ageism toward older adults negatively affects their health and longevity, financial well-being and the economy of Michigan; and,
WHEREAS, preventing ageism in education, employment, housing, culture and health care will benefit all residents; and,
WHEREAS, recognizing it is up to everyone to ensure that older adults are respected and portrayed as capable, competent, effective and valued individuals in all areas of society; and,
WHEREAS, ageism awareness and prevention are beneficial to all citizens of Michigan by improving quality of life;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 9, 2026, as Ageism Awareness Day in Michigan, and encourage all residents to recognize the value of people of every age and work toward eliminating age-based stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination.
