Staff Assault at the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility

On Wednesday, August 13, 2014, at 3:45 p.m., a prisoner housed at the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility stabbed a Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) employee multiple times with an ice pick prison-made weapon. The employee was a Resident Unit Manager (RUM) at the correctional facility and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The employee is still being treated at the hospital, but is expected to be discharged soon.

The prison was immediately placed on lock-down (no prisoner movement) and will remain on lock-down until further notice.

The prisoner responsible for the attack was immediately identified and has been transferred to a higher custody level correctional facility. The Michigan Department of Corrections and Michigan State Police are currently investigating.

The Resident Unit Manager who was the target of the brutal attack and the staff from the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility who quickly responded to the assault did an excellent job of managing the volatile situation and preventing further escalation of the situation.
