Michigan Department of Corrections Offers New Opportunities to Veterans through the SkillBridge Platform

The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) is now offering internship opportunities for those serving in the Armed Services in its Field Operations Administration (FOA) through Department of Defenses’ SkillBridge Program. This program allows active service members in their final 180 days of military service to gain experience in a variety of civilian occupations through specialized training and internships.

The MDOC is currently the only State of Michigan agency utilizing the SkillBridge platform (https://skillbridge.osd.mil/) for this transitional training. The MDOC is currently offering internship opportunities through SkillBridge to support its parole and probation supervision efforts in the following counties: Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Saginaw, Ingham, Jackson, Kent, Marquette, and Osceola. Qualified users can search “probation” or “parole” on the SkillBridge website to find out more about these opportunities. The experience gained during these internships can result in qualified candidates being considered for future employment as parole agents, probation agents, or other roles within the Department of Corrections.

“The Department is committed to working with veterans and service members to help find a fulfilling career that furthers the mission of keeping our neighbors and our state safe,” said Heidi E. Washington, Director of the Michigan Department of Corrections. “Working with SkillBridge will allow us to reach more potential candidates and provide additional job opportunities to those that are completing their military service.”

The MDOC has been recognized as a Gold-Level Veteran-Friendly Employer by the Michigan Veteran Affairs Agency (MVAA) and currently employs over 1,400 veterans. This is the highest level the MVAA awards and the MDOC is one of roughly 20 employers in Michigan to be recognized with this honor. The department has undertaken several initiatives including offering a veteran benefit package, differential pay, specific veteran onboarding program and retention program, and more.

“MVAA is proud to count MDOC as Gold-Level Veteran-Friendly Employer, because we know they are committed to building a workplace that is welcoming to veterans,” said MVAA Director Brian L. Love. “Veterans bring a unique and diverse perspective to the workforce and through the partnership between MDOC and Skillbridge, Michigan veterans will gain the experience needed to become qualified candidates for MDOC career opportunities.”

MDOC Director Washington added, “I am proud that the Department continues our efforts to support the veteran community and I look forward to more opportunities to welcome these brave men and women to meaningful careers with the MDOC.”

The Department is always hiring those that have an interest in keeping our state safe and making a difference in people’s lives, regardless of past military service. If individuals are interested in a career with the MDOC, they can find out more information by visiting the Department’s website at www.michigan.gov/corrections/careers.
