LANSING, MICH. While the city of Flint’s water quality has tested well below the federal action level for lead and been meeting requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act for more than two years, Flint homeowners with residential water test results over the 15 parts per billion (ppb) federal action level may be eligible for fixture and premise plumbing replacement up to $7,500 by a licensed plumber.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has partnered with the Genesee County Habitat for Humanity and United Way of Genesee County to offer this in-home plumbing inspection and replacement program at individual homes that may receive a high lead result, due to antiquated fixture and premise plumbing replacement.
To qualify for plumbing replacement, homeowners must first test their water utilizing a residential water sampling kit. Residential water testing is being provided by the state free of charge and residents can pick up a free test kit at Flint City Hall.
If the residential water test result is above 15 ppb, MDEQ will follow up with the homeowner to conduct additional testing. If results are still elevated, the Genesee County Habitat for Humanity and United Way of Genesee County will jointly manage the response and follow up with the homeowner to determine eligibility for plumbing replacement and/or additional resources.
Homeowners who meet the conditions may be eligible fixture and premise plumbing replacement up to $7,500 by a licensed plumber.
The MDEQ, Genesee County Habitat for Humanity or United Way of Genesee County will verify all repairs. Follow up water sampling will be conducted seven days post completion of replacement and in accordance with MDEQ residential water sampling protocol.
Again, the first step for residents to determine eligibility for the program is testing their water.
