Michigan Attorney General (AG) Dana Nessel to attend, speak at Michigan Civil Rights Commission Meeting

Detroit - Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel will attend the meeting of the Michigan Civil Rights Commission on Friday, Feb. 1, 2019 at 2 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Detroit Offices of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, Cadillac Place, 3054 West Grand Boulevard, Suite 3-600, Detroit, MI 48202.
The Commission is expected to take action on a proposed resolution asking the Attorney General to reconsider AG Formal Opinion 7305 issued in July 2018 pertaining to the Commission’s authority to interpret the Elliott Larsen Civil Rights Act to encompass discrimination because of gender identity and sexual orientation.
AG Nessel will address the Commission on the proposed resolution and request for reconsideration.
The Michigan Department of Civil Rights, the operational arm of the Michigan Civil Rights Commission, is charged with investigating and resolving discrimination complaints and works to prevent discrimination through educational programs that promote voluntary compliance with civil rights laws. The Department also provides information and services to businesses on diversity initiatives and equal employment law.
