Michigan Department of Civil Rights Issues Statement on Signing of Legislation Expanding Voting Rights in Michigan

LANSING, MI — John E. Johnson, Jr., Executive Director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, has issued the following statement on legislation expanding voting rights in Michigan, which was signed into law today by Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

“Voting is the most fundamental of all civil rights,” said MDCR Executive Director John E. Johnson, Jr. “This legislation is a critical step toward preventing the voices of the disenfranchised from being further silenced. Our leaders have once again established Michigan as a potential beacon of inclusion for the country.”

The Michigan Department of Civil Rights is charged with investigating and resolving discrimination complaints and works to prevent discrimination through educational programs that promote voluntary compliance with civil rights laws. The Department also provides information and services to businesses on diversity initiatives and equal employment law.
