MDCR Issues Statement on the Death of Rev. Jesse Jackson
February 17, 2026
Lansing, MI - John E. Johnson, Jr., Executive Director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, has issued the following statement today regarding the death of the Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.
“Reverend Jesse Jackson was a towering figure and key activist in the national civil rights movement and demonstrated a particular connection with the struggle for justice and equality in Michigan. Those of us doing civil rights work in the Detroit area know well that Jackson was frequently present on the front lines, bringing his experience, resources, and reputation to issues that matter to Michigan residents. As one of the last remaining people who marched with Dr. King in the 1960s, his passing urges us to honor the legacy of past heroes with continuing action.
Perhaps most importantly, the catchphrase ‘Keep Hope Alive’ was more than just a speech note. The powerful but simple quote highlights a central reality in the fight for civil rights – hope. Jackson knew that people need to believe that love can conquer hate, and that ultimately human kindness would prevail. As we mourn Jackson, we must remember to hold on to the belief that fighting for justice and equality is important and will eventually lead to a better day.”
The Michigan Department of Civil Rights is charged with investigating and resolving discrimination complaints and works to prevent discrimination through educational programs that promote voluntary compliance with civil rights laws.
