Health Plan Discontinuation

McLaren Health Plan and Physicians Health Plan (PHP) have advised they will no longer offer health insurance to State of Michigan employees, retirees, and dependents effective January 1, 2024. Enrollment and coverage in McLaren Health Plan and PHP will end after December 31, 2023.

Employees enrolled in McLaren Health Plan or PHP needed to choose a new health plan during Benefits Open Enrollment (BOE), which ended November 6, 2023. If you did not elect a new health plan during BOE you will not have health insurance coverage through the State of Michigan as of January 1, 2024.

Current McLaren Health Plan and PHP coverage cannot be extended under any circumstance beyond December 31, 2023. The state cannot automatically enroll employees who did not act during BOE in different health plans. It was your responsibility to enroll in a new health plan during BOE to retain health coverage.

Changing your health plan is a significant decision. It is important to select a plan that best meets your coverage needs by covering the services and medication you require. Contact your health care providers (e.g., primary care physician, specialists, therapists, facilities, etc.) to verify if they are in-network with other State of Michigan health insurance plans offered. Prescription drug formularies are subject to change and should be reviewed prior to making elections.
