Detroit casinos report record March and increased first quarter 2019 aggregate revenue

Detroit, April 10, 2019 - The three Detroit casinos reported a combined record $140.3 million in aggregate revenue for March for a 1.3 percent year-over-year increase. First quarter combined aggregate revenue of $367 million was a 1.9 percent increase from the same period last year. The previous monthly revenue record was $138.6 million set in March 2018.
March revenue also was 22.5 percent higher than February revenue.
During March, MGM Grand Detroit and Greektown Casino recorded higher revenue compared with March 2018 results.
Revenues rose 1.9 percent at MGM to $59.2 million, which was the casino’s highest-ever monthly revenue. Greektown revenue increased 2.6 percent to $32 million. MotorCity Casino reported a fractional 0.3 percent drop with $49.1 million in revenue for the month.
MotorCity set a record for monthly revenue in March 2018 at $49.3 million. Greektown reported its highest ever monthly revenue of $34.7 million in March 2013. The casinos opened in 1999 and 2000.
For the quarter, MGM Grand Detroit led with a 3.9 percent increase in revenue at $157.6 million. Greektown revenue at $84.2 million was up 1.5 percent. MotorCity’s quarterly revenue of $125.2 million was down a fractional 0.3 percent compared with last year.

During March, the three Detroit casinos paid $11.4 million in gaming taxes to the state of Michigan compared with $11.2 million in March 2018. The state received $29.7 million in gaming taxes for the quarter compared with $29.2 million last year. The casinos reported submitting $16.7 in wagering taxes and development agreement payments to the city of Detroit during March.
