Potential Funding Sources

This list shows potential funding sources for heritage trail projects. If you have questions or if you know of other sources to add to this list, please send an e-mail to SpegelD@Michigan.gov.

Michigan Humanities Council

  • Funding Priorities: The Michigan Humanities Council offers multiple grant opportunities, most of which support the concept of heritage trails.
  • Connection to Heritage Trails: Heritage trails strongly support the Vision of this organization.

Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund

  • Funding Priorities: Funds natural resource protection and outdoor recreation.
  • Connection to Heritage Trails: Funded the Kal-Haven Trail heritage project in 2017. Increased accessibility via mobile app strong factor.

Michigan Arts and Cultural Council

  • Funding Priorities: To encourage, initiate and facilitate an enriched artistic, cultural and creative environment in Michigan.
  • Connection to Heritage Trails: Art is a powerful interpretive method. It is used on the Iron Ore Heritage Trail and is appropriate for any trail.

MParks Foundation

  • Funding Priorities: Increased Access to recreation & outdoors for all ages & abilities, through innovative projects & adaptive equipment.
  • Connection to Heritage Trails: The Kal-Haven Trail mobile app is design for increased accessibility to full trail experience.

Community Foundations

  • Funding Priorities: In general, improving the lives of people in a defined geographic area. Research the foundation in your community.
  • Connection to Heritage Trails: Community foundations have funded projects on the Iron Ore Heritage Trail.

Corporate Foundations

  • Funding Priorities: Various. Research large companies in your area or that may have a connection to the heritage along trail.
  • Connection to Heritage Trails: Corporate mining foundations funded projects for the Iron Ore Heritage Trail.
