State Offices Closed in Upper Peninsula and Across Northern Michigan Due to Extreme Weather
March 15, 2026
Governor Gretchen Whitmer has closed all nonessential state office buildings across the 15 Upper Peninsula counties and 13 Northern Michigan counties until 6 a.m. Tuesday, March 17, in response to extreme winter conditions impacting the region.
“Heavy snow, ice, and strong winds are already impacting our northern Michigan communities, making travel unsafe on the roads,” said Governor Whitmer. “As conditions are expected to worsen over the next 24 hours, I have made the decision to close nonessential state office buildings across the region. Please stay home and stay safe. We will get through this storm together, as Michiganders always do.”
Nonessential State Offices Closed
Northern Michigan: Alpena, Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Crawford, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Montmorency, Otsego, Presque Isle
Upper Peninsula: Alger, Baraga, Chippewa, Delta, Dickinson, Gogebic, Houghton, Iron, Keweenaw, Luce, Mackinac, Marquette, Menominee, Ontonagon, Schoolcraft
Blizzard-like conditions are affecting multiple counties across northern Michigan. Ice accumulation may also be an issue in northern Lower Michigan, while the Upper Peninsula could see record-breaking snowfall.
Governor Whitmer activated the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) at 10 a.m. Sunday, March 15, according to the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD). SEOC personnel are monitoring the situation and coordinating with state and local officials, as well as private sector partners, to ensure any resource needs are met.
MSP/EMHSD district coordinators are engaged with local emergency management officials. The SEOC is ready to fulfill any resource requests that may arise.
The SEOC, located in Dimondale, serves as the state’s emergency operations center and is overseen by MSP/EMHSD. It assists local governments and state agencies in coordinating response and recovery efforts.
