State Emergency Operations Center Activation Extended in Response to Rising Water Levels Statewide

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer extended the activation of the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) statewide at noon today as water levels continue to rise, threatening dams and severe flooding across the state.

“Protecting Michiganders and their property is our top priority,” said Governor Whitmer. “With already high water levels across the state and more rain in the forecast over the next few days, we are proactively extending our activation of the State Emergency Operations Center. This will ensure work continues around the Cheboygan Lock and Dam Complex to increase pumping capacity and place sandbags, but it also helps us deploy additional supplies to other areas of the state that may be at risk of flooding. We will keep monitoring the situation and supporting local communities with the resources they need to keep people safe.”

The Michigan State Police Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) has activated the Joint Information Center (JIC) as the source of state agency information dissemination. All media inquiries should be sent to SEOCmedia@michigan.gov

“The MSP stands ready to coordinate response efforts to protect our residents,” said Col. James F. Grady II, director of the MSP and state director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security. “We continue to support the response efforts happening at the Cheboygan Lock and Dam Complex and have our MSP/EMHSD district coordinators working with local emergency managers across the state to make sure communities have the support and resources they need.”

Warming temperatures, combined with recent rain and ongoing snowmelt have increased water levels across the state. The public is urged to sign-up for local alerts to stay informed on the latest news and information. Find out more about flooding preparedness and safety through MIReady
