Commission statement on FedEx facility mass shooting
April 19, 2021
The Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission (MAPAAC) condemns the unnecessary loss of life and violence that took place at the recent FedEx facility mass shooting in Indiana, where four of the eight victims were Sikh Asian Americans of Indian descent.
Although not a targeted hate crime, gun violence in this country is an epidemic that disproportionately negatively affects the most marginalized among us, or our black, brown, and immigrant communities. We also cannot ignore the long history of hate violence against Sikhs in this county. FBI hate crimes data shows Sikhs to be one of the most commonly targeted religious groups - behind Jews and Muslims - in modern America.
We call for safety for our communities and awareness of rising violence that often does target us because of who we are. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the families of the victims and our Sikh American community.
