Newcomer Rental Subsidy Frequently Asked Questions

  • The program is designed to allow participants to remain enrolled in the program for a full 12-month period regardless of an increase in income or employment for those unemployed at the time of enrollment.

  • No. If you migrate out of Michigan, the rental subsidy payments will end.

  • Yes. You will need to report your change of address within 30 days of your move to the Office of Global Michigan. You will also be required to submit your new lease or rental verification document.

  • No. The program provides rent assistance only.

  • No. The program is available for a maximum of 12 months for each individual or household.

  • No. The program is designed to provide rental support only.

  • If an informal agreement is in place, the landlord/homeowner must either complete the Rental Verification form or provide a written letter. The written letter must, at minimum, include the rental address and the monthly rental obligation, it must be dated and signed by the landlord/homeowner.

  • No. The program provides funding for rental support only.

  • No. The program provides support for future rental obligations.

  • No. The program provides support for monthly rent payments only.

  • Once you complete the application and submit all the necessary documents, your application review should take approximately 14 days. If you have any questions about your application, email LEO-RefugeeServices@michigan.gov.

  • Currently the application forms are available in English only. Contact LEO-RefugeeServices@michigan.gov if you need assistance completing the application.

  • All payments will be made directly to the landlord.

  • If the circumstances of your denial (income, employment, rental obligation, etc.) change, you may reapply.
