Aspenwood Drive Area of Interest (Grand Rapids, Kent County)

An independent drinking water sample was collected from a home on Aspenwood Drive as part of a property transaction. The results showed PFAS levels exceeded criteria for PFOA. These results were shared with the local and state health departments and EGLE. EGLE sampled two homes adjoining the original exceedance, and both drinking water samples contained PFOA above criteria. EGLE expanded the sampling area to include more homes and results were received in October 2025. The highest results were 22 ppt PFOA (compared to 8 ppt). There are no known PFAS sources in the immediate residential area, however, potential sources in the greater area are being investigated. Groundwater flow direction is unknown but estimated to be to the southwest toward the Thornapple River.

Drinking water information

EGLE, DHHS, and local health reviewed residential well logs and developed a plan to sample identified drinking water wells. As of November 2025, 24 private drinking water wells have been sampled. Of those, 12 had detections above PFAS criteria, 10 had detections below criteria, and two were non-detect for PFAS. All homes in the sampling area that had detections are being offered filters by state and local health departments. EGLE will continue to coordinate expanded sampling of residential wells in the area as needed, working with DHHS and local health.
