Background
The General Motors (GM), Pontiac North Campus (PNC) facility is located at 1 Pontiac Plaza and originally consisted of 595-acres, prior to 2009. Today, the GM PNC facility comprises approximately 285 acres and 310 acres is owned and managed by Revitalizing Auto Communities Environmental Response (RACER) Trust. EPA is working with GM on remedial activities.
In 2022, EPA requested GM sample for PFAS at an area of the facility that historically managed plating waste materials and had painting operations.
Groundwater is typically found at depths ranging from 8 to 35 feet below ground and flows generally toward the south-southwest toward the RACER Trust owned property. Some unusual water level measurements were observed during the August 2022 gauging event relative to historical groundwater elevations and flow direction, so GM will be collecting another round of groundwater levels to further assess groundwater flow conditions.
Content posted December 2022.

Drinking water
EPA, EGLE, DHHS, and the local health department are evaluating residentials well records downgradient of the site. Some nearby residents get their drinking water from Great Lakes Water Authority (Lake Huron). This water supply has tested non-detect for PFAS since compliance monitoring began in 2020.
Anticipated activities
EPA will coordinate with EGLE and determine next steps.
Historical timeline
-
2022
- In 2022, EPA requested GM to perform PFAS sampling. GM's consultant collected groundwater samples in August.
- In September 2022, GM submitted a memorandum with the results to EPA. PFOS and PFOA were detected in groundwater monitoring wells above groundwater clean-up criteria, the highest of which was 440 ppt PFOS (compared to 16 ppt) and 22 ppt PFOA (compared to 8 ppt).
