There are a variety of healthcare providers who can help you after a sexual assault. Some specialize in acute care (care within five days of the assault) and forensic evidence collection, while others focus on children or can provide wellness examinations or follow up care.

• SANE Program: There are specialized Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) programs across Michigan that provide free medical forensic examinations. SANE programs are often the best source of care for adult and adolescent victims and include services such as sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and emergency contraception. Some SANE programs also have nurses who are specially trained to work with children. • Child Advocacy Center: The Child Advocacy Center (CAC) in your community can help coordinate medical evaluation for victims of child sexual abuse.  Even if it has been more than five days since the last abusive incident, the CAC can help coordinate medical care such as a wellness check and testing for STIs. • Hospital Emergency Room (ER): If your community doesn’t have a SANE program, every hospital emergency room in Michigan is required to provide a medical forensic examination to a person stating that they have been sexually assaulted in the previous five days and are seeking an exam. MCL 333.21527. 
• Family Doctor or General Practitioner: Most family doctors and general practitioners DO NOT provide specialized care for sexual assault victims or forensic evidence collection. Your family doctor or general practitioner can treat your medical concerns, pregnancy, STI testing and provide general follow up care.
• Family Planning Clinic or Local Health Department. These organizations DO NOT provide specialized care for sexual assault victims or forensic evidence collection.  These organizations may be able to provide you with low or no-cost testing and care for sexual transmitted infections or pregnancy.  Contact a Family Planning Clinic or local Health Department by using the MDHHS directories for these services.
