    Governor Whitmer and her staff are available to assist Michiganders with problems they are experiencing with a state government department or agency. This includes departments of the Governor’s Cabinet (such as the Michigan Department of Corrections, Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, or the Michigan Department of Treasury), or independent agencies (such as the Michigan Attorney General or Michigan Secretary of State). A full list of these departments and agencies can be found on the State Departments listing.

    While the Governor can provide assistance if a problem arises with any of these departments, the Governor’s office cannot ask them to ignore or make exceptions to regulations or violate the law. Because Governor Whitmer serves as the executive of Michigan’s state government, neither she nor her staff can provide assistance for problems that are unrelated to state government. Here are some examples of topics not covered by state government, and some resources you may be able to use for assistance:

Various Information

  • Medicare – Medicare, a health insurance program for seniors and the disabled, is run by the federal government. This is not to be confused with Medicaid, which is overseen by the state. For issues regarding Medicare, including disputes over coverage, enrollment, and other similar matters, contact Senator PetersSenator Stabenow, or your Congressperson. If you are unsure of who your Congressperson is, you may find them by using your zip code on the find your US Representative search site.

    Legal Issues – The Governor’s office cannot interfere with the legal process. If you are seeking legal help or advice, the State Bar of Michigan provides an attorney referral service that can be accessed either at that link or by calling (800) 968-0738. If you wish to file a complaint against a lawyer, that can be done via the Attorney Grievance Commission. If you wish to file a complaint against a judge, that can be done via the Judicial Tenure Commission.

    Immigration – Unless it is regarding State of Michigan policy regarding immigration, you will need to contact your federal elected officials for concerns regarding federal immigration policy, applications for visas, and other similar issues. For assistance with these issues you may contact your United States Senators, Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow, and/or your Congressperson. If you are unsure of who your Congressperson is, you may find them by using your zip code on the find your US Representative search site.

    Postal Service – The United States Postal Service is run by the federal government. For issues regarding the Postal Service, contact Senator PetersSenator Stabenow, or your Congressperson, who can be found by using your zip code on the find your US Representative search site.

    Social Security – Social Security is run by the federal government. For issues regarding Social Security, such as issues with a pending application for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) contact Senator PetersSenator Stabenow, or your Congressperson, who can be found by using your zip code on the find your US Representative search site.
