Michigan Technical Assistance Center Empowers Communities to Bring Home Federal Infrastructure Funding
Technical Assistance Center opens third window for Michigan communities to apply for grants to improve critical infrastructure
LANSING, Mich.— Billions of dollars in federal infrastructure grants are up for grabs through President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) and Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). The Michigan Infrastructure Office (MIO) Technical Assistance Center (TAC) is opening its third application window to empower communities to apply for and win federal investments that will positively impact Michiganders for generations. Grants can be used to build safe roads and bridges, more robust transit connectivity and resilient infrastructure while helping Michigan reach the goals of the MI Healthy Climate Plan. To date, the TAC has helped 25 entities across the state apply for federal funding.
“Our mission at the Technical Assistance Center is simple: to empower Michigan's communities with the tools and guidance needed to secure necessary federal funding,” said TAC Director Kris Brady. “From revamping road safety to modernizing public transit and embracing electric vehicles, these funds hold the key to bolstering our state's infrastructure resilience. Through our technical assistance, we're not just facilitating grant applications; we're igniting a movement toward sustainable development, enriching the lives of every Michigander and improving our infrastructure for future generations.
The third application window will remain open from Wednesday, May 15 to Friday, May 31. The TAC is hosting a live webinar at 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 20 to help communities better understand technical assistance, the grant opportunities available and the application process. The TAC will also hold office hours at 10 a.m. Friday, May 24 to meet directly with entities interested in applying for funding.
“Upon hearing the news that the Menominee County Road Commission’s request for grant assistance was approved by the TAC, we were quickly contacted to begin the process,” said Darrell Cass, managing director of the Menominee County Road Commission. “The Road Commission team was guided through every step of the process, from project team development through final submission. The quality of our submission surpassed all expectations and will prove to be very competitive amongst others nationally. In turn, we hope this will result in a successful application. With limited resources, staff and funding, submission of a grant like this would not have been possible for the Road Commission.”
The TAC aids communities in leveraging federal funding opportunities by providing technical assistance, planning, and matching grants to locals, tribal governments, and other eligible entities. Support available through this Window includes consulting services for grant identification for project funding, grant writing and technical responses (benefit-cost analysis), and match to projects.
“Every community deserves safe roads and bridges, robust transit connectivity, and resilient infrastructure,” said Zachary Kolodin, Michigan’s chief infrastructure officer and director of the Michigan Infrastructure Office. “It’s imperative that Michigan communities take advantage of this opportunity to apply for billions of dollars in funding that have the ability to drastically improve quality of life, make our infrastructure assets safer, and usher in a sustainable and equitable future for all Michiganders.”
Window 3 of the Technical Assistance Center will provide support for the following federal Notices of Funding Opportunity (NOFO):
