WHEREAS, pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in the United States, it estimated that in 2019, 56,770 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and 45,750 will die from the disease; and,
WHEREAS, when symptoms of pancreatic cancer present themselves, it is usually too late for an optimistic prognosis, and 67 percent of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first year of their diagnosis while 91 percent of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first five years; and,
WHEREAS, while survival rates have improved in the past few decades, there remains no cure for pancreatic cancer; and,
WHEREAS, the IAM149 Foundation, honoring the legacy of Caldwell, Idaho, Police Officer James Chad Register, is committed to supporting those patients battling pancreatic cancer nationwide, as well as to those who have lost their lives to this disease and are committed to nothing less than a cure; and,
WHEREAS, the good health and well-being of the residents of every state are enhanced by a direct result of increased awareness and research into early detection, causes, and effective treatment.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 2019 as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month in Michigan.
