November 3 - November 9, 2019: Winter Hazards Awareness Week

WHEREAS, each year, Michigan residents encounter winter hazards that include icy roads, cold weather injuries, and over-exertion from snow removal; and,

WHEREAS, residents may become injured or suffer property damage due to severe winter weather that brings extreme cold, wind, heavy ice, and large amounts of snow; and,

WHEREAS, severe winter weather requires Michigan drivers to take extra precautions to ensure traveling safely, such as weatherizing their vehicles in late fall, which includes checking the tire treads, windshield washing solution, a proper mix of anti-freeze and water in the cooling system, and having an automotive professional check the belts, hoses, tires, battery, and coolant; and,

WHEREAS, residents can prepare for severe winter weather by building an emergency preparedness kit, which includes extra blankets and clothes, enough nonperishable food items and water to last three days per person, a first aid kit, medications, pet supplies, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radio, a portable radio, and a flashlight with extra batteries; and,

WHEREAS, during this week, we join with the Michigan State Police and local and state emergency management coordinators to encourage all Michiganders to learn more about winter safety and the importance of winter emergency preparedness;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 3-9, 2019, as Winter Hazards Awareness Week in Michigan.
