January 2020: Human Trafficking Awareness Month

WHEREAS, in 2018, more than 10,000 suspected incidents of human trafficking were reported in the U.S.; and, 

 

WHEREAS, human trafficking, in the forms of labor trafficking and sex trafficking, is a pervasive and exploitative crime occurring in communities across Michigan, throughout the United States, and around the world; and,

 

WHEREAS, the state of Michigan recognizes human trafficking as a serious threat to the public health and safety of its residents, particularly for the most vulnerable; and,

 

WHEREAS, ending human trafficking requires an intricate, multi-faceted, statewide solution that includes health care providers, social workers, child advocacy groups, law enforcement, faith-based organizations, legislators, and the judiciary system; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Michigan Human Trafficking Commission, housed in the Department of Attorney General, and the Human Trafficking Health Advisory Board, housed within the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, work in collaboration with agencies, organizations, and individuals across the state to address issues arising from human trafficking; and,

 

WHEREAS, organizations across Michigan work daily to enhance awareness and prevention efforts, provide survivors and their families with supportive services, and hold perpetrators accountable; and,

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim January 2020 as Human Trafficking Awareness Month in Michigan.
