September 20 - 26, 2020: Forensic Science Recognition Week

WHEREAS, forensic science is an integral component of the criminal justice system, aiding in the investigation of a criminal activity and leading to the prosecution of perpetrators and the exoneration of innocent individuals throughout the state of Michigan; and,

 

WHEREAS, forensic scientists are specially trained in their area of expertise, and forensic science service providers may be accredited to international standards to ensure quality results are provided in an accurate and unbiased manner; and,

 

WHEREAS, forensic scientists are responsible for collecting evidence, conducting detailed analyses, communicating results in criminal court proceedings as expert witnesses, and educating stakeholders about forensic science; and,

 

WHEREAS, forensic science service providers complete analyses in a range of disciplines that may include Biology/DNA, Bloodstain Pattern, Crime Scene Investigation, Digital Evidence, Document Examination, Facial Identification, Firearms/Toolmarks, Fire Debris and Explosives, Footwear and Tire, Friction Ridge (Latent Prints), Materials (Trace), Seized Drugs, Speaker Recognition, Toxicology, and Video/Image Analysis; and,

 

WHEREAS, forensic science service providers build and maintain investigative databases including Friction Ridge, DNA, and Firearms that provide significant investigative leads in criminal investigations; and,

 

WHEREAS, each year, tens of thousands of evidence items are analyzed, and hundreds of crime scenes are processed by forensic science service providers throughout the state of Michigan;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 20-26, 2020 as Forensic Science Recognition Week.
