October 7, 2020: Walk to School Day

WHEREAS, on October 7, 2020, thousands of students across Michigan who are able to will walk to school in conjunction with a nationwide celebration of biking, health, and alternative modes of transportation; and,

 

WHEREAS, during the month of October and throughout the year, many organizations encourage students and citizens to choose walking as a mode of transportation; and,

 

WHEREAS, in collaboration with these organizations, schools throughout Michigan encourage students to live a healthy and active lifestyle, while also providing transportation safety education; and,

 

WHEREAS, walking to school, work, and for leisure has a positive impact on health, wellness, and the environment, and, in general, students are healthier and more academically attentive, traffic is less congested, and busing costs are reduced in schools that continually participate in Safe Routes to School programs; and,

 

WHEREAS, during the current COVID-19 pandemic, in many communities throughout Michigan, the trip to school may simply involve walking within their homes. Regardless, Walk to School Day is a great way to support physical activity and wellness in a time of significant change. Whether hosting a “virtual walk,” joining a neighborhood-wide event, or walking to school, there is a way to take part while ensuring local public health guidance is followed; and,

 

WHEREAS, Walk to School Day is supported by the Michigan Department of Transportation, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the Michigan Fitness Foundation, the Michigan Department of Education, the Safe Routes Partnership, and by many other partners;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 7, 2020, as Walk to School Day in Michigan and encourage everyone to consider the safety and health of children today and every day.
