WHEREAS, first responders include nurses, paramedics, emergency medical services personnel, firefighters, police officers, 911 dispatchers, search and rescue teams, and members of other organizations in the public safety sector; and,
WHEREAS, first responders risk their lives and selflessly run into danger to protect our state’s citizens, serving as the first defense against emergencies that threaten our communities; and,
WHEREAS, first responders are highly trained and undergo extensive education, training, and personal sacrifice to develop the expertise required to respond to emergency situations; and,
WHEREAS, according to the International Public Safety Association, an average of 225 first responders are killed in the line of duty each year in the United States, leaving approximately 540 children without a parent; and,
WHEREAS, during the COVID-19 pandemic, while most citizens have been asked to stay home, first responders have been on the frontlines, risking their own health and safety to rescue others; and,
WHEREAS, on this day, we should honor the Michigan’s brave, selfless, and compassionate heroes who save countless lives every day and pay tribute to those who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 28, 2020, as First Responders Day in Michigan.
