WHEREAS, according to the American Cancer Society, stomach cancer only has a 32 percent five-year survival rate; and,
WHEREAS, 27,600 new cases will be diagnosed in 2020 in the United States, and 11,010 will die from stomach cancer; and,
WHEREAS, one-third of stomach cancers are diagnosed at stage IV, which only has a 5 percent five-year survival rate; and,
WHEREAS, in 2017, there was an estimated 116,525 people living with stomach cancer in the United States; and,
WHEREAS, the Black population has higher incidence rates and death rates of 10.1 and 5.4 respectively compared to the white population with 5.4 and 2.3 respectively; and,
WHEREAS, stomach cancer mortality rates have declined by 50 percent over the past 30 years; and,
WHEREAS, during this month, it is important to raise awareness about stomach cancer, advance funding for research, and provide education and support internationally to patients, families, and caregivers, while pursuing the ultimate goal of making the cure for stomach cancer a reality;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 2020 as Curing Stomach Cancer Month in Michigan.
