WHEREAS, the week of December 9th is recognized around the world as Computer Science Education Week in honor of Grace Hopper, one of the first female pioneer computer scientists and first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer; and,
WHEREAS, computer science is a 21st century skill that is listed among the top 50 job growth areas in Michigan; and,
WHEREAS, teaching students computer science education can lead to high-tech, high-wage sustainable careers, and engaging students early increases their confidence, determination, and creativity; and,
WHEREAS, according to THE Journal, Michigan has become the 32nd state in the U.S. to adopt standards for K-12 computer science education; and,
WHEREAS, on December 11, 2020, students across the state of Michigan will attempt to set a Guinness World Record by having the most people complete an online lesson in computer coding during a 24-hour period, helping Michigan in its goal to become a leader in education through supporting high-quality instruction; and,
WHEREAS, to commemorate Computer Science Education Week, schools and students across Michigan are encouraged to engage in “an hour of code” to enhance students’ problem solving skills and lead them to create, and not just consume, technology;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim December 7-13, 2020, as Computer Science Education Week in Michigan.
