April 2021: Financial Literacy Month

 

WHEREAS, the COVID-19 pandemic has presented numerous financial challenges for Michiganders, and improving one's knowledge of personal finances contributes to the well-being not only of individuals and families, but also of the state as a whole; and,

 

WHEREAS, the financial challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic have further amplified the need for sound personal finance practices at every stage of life, including understanding the importance of saving, navigating access to affordable credit options, and creating a reasonable and structured budget; and,
 

WHEREAS, financial literacy also includes ensuring that Michiganders understand the costs and benefits of proper insurance coverage for their home, property, and health; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Health Insurance Marketplace special enrollment period spans from February 15 to August 15, 2021, and individuals who are educated about their personal financial situation are better equipped to make informed decisions about their health insurance options; and,

 

WHEREAS, improving financial literacy for both youths and adults better positions them to manage their personal finances effectively on a day-to-day basis and during challenging times; and,

 

WHEREAS, the designation of April 2021 as Financial Literacy Month will help to raise public awareness about the importance of financial education in Michigan;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 2021 as Financial Literacy Month in Michigan.
