April 2021: Stop the Violence Month

WHEREAS, violence and the fear of crime affect the well-being and quality of life of all Michiganders, and we wear a white ribbon in April as a sign of peace and unity; and,

WHEREAS, crime persists in all neighborhoods, and the harsh reality of violence plagues some of our most vulnerable citizens; and,
 

WHEREAS, the pain and darkness of violence hurt people through hate and bias crimes; child abuse; police brutality; gun violence; assault; and school, senior citizen, and family violence; and,

WHEREAS, this year's theme is "We Are Champions for Democracy and We Stand in Unity for Peace," and we applaud our military, firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency services personnel, educators, elected officials, and everyday heroes as they battle violence in our communities and stand ready, often under difficult circumstances and at great personal risk, to protect the lives and property of their fellow citizens; and,

WHEREAS, it is the goal of our state to collectively collaborate and share resources to ensure the availability of our police officers, firefighters, and other public safety personnel for the safety of our communities; and,

WHEREAS, National Stop the Violence Month has been established to focus attention on the severity of the problem of violence in our society; to serve as an opportunity to recognize the individuals, programs, and organizations who are making a difference in our communities; and, most importantly, to heighten awareness of the need to implement measures to reduce the chances of continuing violence;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 2021 as Stop the Violence Month in Michigan.
