April 25 - May 1, 2021: Arbor Week

WHEREAS, trees play a significant role in our environment and in the quality of our lives by providing shelter for animals as well as growing nuts, seeds, leaves, and fruits; and,

WHEREAS, trees also provide oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide, allowing us to breathe clean air and reducing outdoor temperatures, which results in less use of energy through air conditioning units; and,

WHEREAS, trees are jungle gyms to be climbed and conquered for children, shade for our homes, and sources of the materials that make up our homes and much of what is inside them. From paper products to furniture, wood is an important and beautiful resource; and,

WHEREAS, in Michigan, we are fortunate to have a rich variety of trees that present us with a striking gift of color each autumn. The reds and golds remind us of the cycle of life and the importance of making a difference during our time on the earth; and,

WHEREAS, we must maintain our precious heritage of woodland, help prevent the shrinking of our forests, and preserve and protect the ecosystem for future generations who will inherit the trees we plant today; and,

WHEREAS, during the months of April and May and during Arbor Day on April 30th, we should appreciate trees and the crucial roles they play in our lives, recommit ourselves to protecting trees and our environment, and take an action by planting a tree;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 25 - May 1, 2021 as Arbor Week and April 30th as Arbor Day in Michigan.
