WHEREAS, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council, 40 percent of food produced is wasted in the United States, contributing to more than eight percent of the nation's total greenhouse gas emissions; and,
WHEREAS, food waste is a vastly overlooked contributor to climate change; and,
WHEREAS, reducing food waste represents an opportunity for individuals, companies, and communities to reverse global warming while simultaneously feeding more people, increasing economic benefits, and preserving threatened ecosystems; and,
WHEREAS, it also aligns with the MI Healthy Climate Plan, which aims to protect Michiganders' public health and the environment and help develop new clean energy jobs by putting Michigan on a path towards becoming fully carbon-neutral by 2050; and,
WHEREAS, the State of Michigan is positioned as a global leader in sustainability through its work to reduce the impact of food waste on the planet; and,
WHEREAS, during this day, we should recommit ourselves to reducing food waste in our daily lives and each do our part to protect our environment;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 28, 2021 as Stop Food Waste Day in Michigan.
