WHEREAS, Michigan is home to more than 2.4 million adults age 60 years and older who make positive and lasting contributions to our great state every day; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan has more residents over the age of 60 than under the age of 18; and,
WHEREAS, our state is committed to supporting older adults by ensuring there are opportunities available in local communities to help them stay engaged, maintain their health and independence, and live happily and thrive as they age; and,
WHEREAS, older adults are stronger socially and economically because of community support and recognition to provide them with resources for a fulfilling life; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan was the first state in the Midwest and fifth in the nation to join the AARP/World Health organization Age-Friendly movement; and,
WHEREAS, older adults have faced various challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic including increased risk for severe illness and loneliness from social isolation and distancing; and,
WHEREAS, our state has prioritized COVID-19 testing and vaccines for older Michiganders to ensure their health and well-being; and,
WHEREAS, our state has implemented mental health programs to provide emotional support for older Michiganders burdened by pandemic-related stress; and,
WHEREAS, per this year's theme of "Communities of Strength," we should take time to honor the older adults in our communities who have built resilience and strength over their lives through successes, failures, joys, and difficulties, and have shared these stories to support and inspire others. We should recognize the power of connection and engagement in building strong communities and promote ways to nurture ourselves, reinforce our strength, and thrive as a community; and,
WHEREAS, we join with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Aging and Adult Services Agency to encourage Michigan communities and residents to acknowledge the older adults in their lives and thank them for what they have done for our communities;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2021 as Older Americans Month in Michigan.
