WHEREAS, blood donation is essential to helping patients survive surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses, and traumatic injuries; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our state; and,
WHEREAS, one blood donation can save up to three lives, and only three percent of age-eligible people in the U.S. donate yearly; and,
WHEREAS, there have been dramatic reductions in donations due to the COVID-19 pandemic; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan is home to a number of committed public and private organizations working to raise awareness about the importance of blood donations, including Versiti Blood Center of Michigan and the American Red Cross; and,
WHEREAS, the Michigan Blood Donation Day effectively serves to remind us that we need to constantly replenish our blood supply through donations and raise public awareness around the urgent need for blood donations;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 4, 2021, as Blood Donation Day in Michigan and encourage all eligible donors of our state to support our local blood drives to save lives and protect our citizens.
