September 12-18, 2021: Folic Acid Awareness Week

WHEREAS, folic acid is an essential B vitamin that helps the body make healthy new cells; and,

 

WHEREAS, most importantly, women of reproductive age should get 400 mcg of folic acid every day to help prevent some birth defects; and,

 

WHEREAS, women can get 400 mcg of folic acid each day by taking a vitamin with the recommended folic acid in it or by eating fortified foods such as rice, pasta, and breakfast cereals, in addition to consuming a balanced diet rich in natural folate; and,

 

WHEREAS, folic acid helps prevent some major birth defects of the baby's brain or spine by up to 70%, that occur very early in pregnancy (3-4 weeks after conception), before most women know they are pregnant; and,

 

WHEREAS, not all birth defects can be prevented, but women can increase their chances of having a healthy baby by taking folic acid before and during pregnancy; and,

 

WHEREAS, preconception health starts with ensuring your body has what it needs. Folic acid is a great way to start establishing healthy habits;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 12-18, 2021, as Folic Acid Awareness Week in Michigan.
