December 3, 2021: Day of Persons with Disabilities
December 03, 2021
WHEREAS, the annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was proclaimed in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and in all aspects of life; and,
WHEREAS, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, about 27 percent of people in Michigan have disabilities, and these rates increase with age, with 41 percent of Michigan adults who are 75 years or older having a disability of some kind; and,
WHEREAS, persons with disabilities face physical, social, and economic barriers that prevent full and effective participation as equal members of society and are less likely to access health care, education, and employment; and,
WHEREAS, it is important to ensure that people with disabilities are given equal access to employment, public services, public accommodations, and telecommunications in our state; and,
WHEREAS, on this day and throughout the year, we recommit ourselves to shaping a future in which all individuals are able to enjoy their full rights and freedom, as well as to removing barriers and eliminating discrimination based on disability;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim December 3, 2021, as Day of Persons with Disabilities in Michigan.
